Translation of Khutba (Friday August 6, 2010)

Bismillah-r-Rahman-r-RahimW
Praise be to Allah SWT and peace and blessings upon our beloved Prophet Muhamad SAAWS.

As Ramadhan Mubarak is around, we’ll talk today about fasting in-sha-Allah. Allah SWT says in the Holy Qur’an in Surat Al-Baqarah:
“The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and criterion (i.e. between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights the month (i.e. the crescent of 1st night of Ramadhan, and is present at his home), he must observe Saum of that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number of days (i.e. of no fasting) must be made up from other days. Allah intends for your ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. He wants that you must complete the same number of days, and that you must magnify Allah (i.e. by Takbeer) for having guided you, so that you may be grateful to Him” (S.2 V.185)

Dear Muslim brothers, this blessed month is the season for Khair and for Ibadah. In this Holy month of Ramadhan, the Muslim’s willingness for goodness (Khair) multiplies, and he becomes more active for Ibadah, seeking Allah SWT’s satisfaction and forgiveness. With His kindness, Allah SWT blesses His believers who perform Saum by multiplying their reward and extending them His bounties. So this month is the season for forgiving the sins and upgrading of the status.

Dear fasting believers, be informed that the greatest action of worship in this blessed month is fasting. Mentioned in the Sahi-hain (of Bukhari and Muslim), narrated from Abi Saeed Al-Khedhri RAA saying that the Prophet Muhammad SAAWS said: “Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allah SWT, Allah will keep him 70 autumns away from the hell of fire”, i.e. 70 years. So if just fasting one day keeps the slave away from fire for 70 years, what about fasting the whole month of Ramadhan? “

Fasting is a way to Jannah, and one of its gates. Narrated by Sahl ibn Saad Al-Saedi RAA, that Prophet Muhammad SAAWS said: “Al-Jannah has one of its gates named by Ar-Rayan wherein those who performed Saum will get thru it and nobody else will enter it.” Also Saum and Qur’an intercede for the slave on the day of Judgement. Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Amrou RAA saying that the Prophet SAAWS has said: “Siyam and Qur’an intercede for the slave on the day of Judgement. Siyam would say: Oh my Lord, I prevented him from drinking and eating in the day, so make me intercede for him. And the Qur’an would say: I prevented him from sleeping at night, so make me intercede for him. Rasulullah said: then they are allowed to intercede.” Which means Allah SWT will accept their intercession, i.e. Shafaa-at, and He will allow him to enter Jannah. This Hadith is narrated by Ahmad and Tabarani in Al-Fath Al-Rabbani 216/9 and Majmaa Al-Zawa-ed 381/10.

Ramadhan fasting will especially deletes sins and clears bad deeds. Refering to Al-Sahihain of Bukhari and Muslim, narrated from a Hadith of Abi Huraira RAA as saying, Rasulullah SAAWS has said: “Whoever fasts Ramadhan with sincere faith and wishing for reward, his past sins would be forgiven.” And in Sahih Muslim, narrated also on Abi Huraira RAA, that Prophet Muhammad SAAWS said: “The 5 prayers, the Friday till the next Friday, Ramadhan to the next Ramadhan do all clear the sins as long as major sins (i.e. Kaba-er) are not committed.”

Please be informed that one of the most revered and greatest deeds in this month of the year, is Salat-u-Tarawih with the Imam until he finishes or leaves home. Also dear Muslim brother, do not forget to pray prior to the end of the night. Narrated from Umar RAA by saying: “And those who sleep for it are better than those who hold it at night”, (i.e. those who take rest by sleeping in the beginning of the night to get up for Qiyam-u-lail are better prepared than those who spend few hours praying at night because they may get bored). Also the Prophet Muhammad SAAWS has urged his Muslim Ummah to perform Qiyam-u-lail, by saying: “Oh people, if you say Salam to each other, feed the poor, and pray while the others are sleeping, you will enter Al-Jannah with peace, i.e. with ease.” He also particularly urged praying the nights of Ramadhan by saying: “Whoever stands in Ramadhan with sincere faith and wishing for reward, all his past sins would be forgiven.” And regarding praying with Imam during Salat-u-Tarawih, he said: “Whoever stands with the Imam until he leaves, he will get the reward for Qiyam of 1 night.” i.e. until the Imam finishes his Salat, as if he would have spent that whole night in goodness and reward.

Dear fasting Mu-mins, please be informed that another most revered and greatest deed in this month is reading and Tarteel of the Holy Qur’an. This month is that of the Qur’an where the Holy Prophet SAAWS used to meet with the trusted angel of revelation (Wahy) Jibreel AS. Rasulullah SAAWS said: “Whoever reads 1 letter of the book of Allah he will get 1 Hasana, and one Hasana has 10 example rewards, I don’t say Alif Lam Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.” The Holy Qur’an also intercedes for his reader on the day of Judgement as mentioned earlier. In Sahih, it is reported that Rasulullah SAAWS described surat Al-Baqarah and Aal-Imran as Az-zahra-wain (may be 2 flowers?) and said: “They come on the day of Judgement like 2 clouds protesting for their friend”, i.e. on those who memorize them and used to always read them in Salat. They come protecting, defending and arguing for him on the day of Judgement. According to Abu Huraira RAA, who said Rasulullah SAAWS commented on Surat Al-Mulk by saying: “It was used to intercede for a man until he was forgiven” (according to some other Hadith, this man used to read it every night before sleeping). This Hadith was compiled by Termidhi and Al-Albani made it Hadith Hasan. Therefore, you should take care of this Great Book, read the book of Allah SWT and repeat continuously its Tilawah in this blessed month.

Dear Muslims, be learned also that another most revered and greatest deed especially in this month is Silat-u-Rahim (i.e. keeping good relations with the kinship) and making Sadaqah on the poor, the dispossessed, and the needy. Indeed this month is that of the spending with kindness and generousity. Rasulullah SAAWS used to be the most kind among the people and most generous, giving like someone who does never fear poverty. And when this Holy month comes, he used to be the greatest generous man like the wind sent with goodness, as reported by Ibn Abbas RAAH.

Sadaqa is one of the greatest doors of Birr. Rasulullah SAAWS said: “And Sadaqa is a proof” i.e. a sign on the true belief of a slave of Allah, because he is showing he wins over one of the natural human characters which is covetousness or Shuhh. Allah SWT says in the Quran in Surat At-Taghabun:
“…And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, then they are the successful.” (S64 V. 16)
Rasulullah SAAWS has ordered us to make Sadaqa repeatedly and said: “Oh people, make Sadaqa”, and said: “Fear the hellfire even with a piece of a date”, he also ordered women especially to intensify Sadaqa, and said: “Make Sadaqa because I saw most people of the hell fire were women. The reward of Sadaqa is greatly appreciated when it is made secretly, the one which your right hand spends without your left hand knowing, so make your Sadaqa as secret as possible, so that you are far from showing proudness and PR (i.e. Riyaa and Sumaa). This Sadaqa extinguishes the anger of the Lord as informed by al-Mustafa SAAWS who said: “Making of Maarouf prevents from terrible death, secret Sadaqa extinguishes the anger of the Lord, and Silatur Rahim increases lifespan”.

Dear Mumins, pleased be informed also that another most revered and greatest deed in this month is the performing of Umrah as it (or its reward) equals one Haj with the Prophet SAAWS. In Sahihain, it is narrated by Ibn Abbas RAAH that Prophet Muhammad SAAWS told one woman from al-Ansar: “One Umrah in it, i.e. in Ramadhan, equals one Haj with me.”

May Allah SWT bless you and me in the Holy Qur’an, and benefits you and me with its Ayat and Dhikr Hakim. I say this and I seek Allah’s forgiveness for you and me. He is the most forgiving and the most merciful.

Second Khutbah.

Allah SWT says in the Holy Qur’an in Surat: Al-Ahzab :
“Oh you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him, and speak always the truth.””He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allah and His messenger, he has indeed achieved a great achievement” (S.33 V.70-71)
I recommend myself and you to fear Allah SWT and remember Him in all your matters and especially in your fasting.
It is the month of Taqwa as Rasulullah SAAWS said: “For whoever does not refrain from lying and false witnessing, Allah does not need that he stops from eating and drinking.” Narrated by Bukhari. Ibn Al-Arabi said: the meaning of this Hadith is that any one who does this is not rewarded for his Saum, i.e. the reward for Saum does not stand with equaling it with false witnessing and lying (Fath Al-Bari, 4/117). It is also narrated on Abi Huraira RAA saying Rasulullah SAAWS said: “If or when it is a fasting day for one of you, he shall not indulge in sexual intercourse and shall not shout. So if someone insults him or tries to fight him, he shall say: I am fasting.” This Hadith is agreed upon.

Therefore, dear Muslim, protect your fasting, and do not injure it with smear talk or a moment of anger, or with Ghibah, Namima and lie. Do not allow your bad deeds and mistakes of your tongue take away your reward and Hasanat. May we ask Allah SWT to help us fasting this blessed month and performing night prayers in it.
